About 200 plans from Hungary and abroad were submitted to the Malév aircraft paintwork design tender. Malév is using this tender as a way to select a totally new livery for one of the Q-400 turboprop aircraft. One criterion of the final design is that it should draw the attention of air travellers to the unique values of Hungary.

One of the four Q400s that have joined the Malév regional fleet within the past six months arrived. Unusually, it does not wear the traditional Malév livery. The reason: at the beginning of June the company published a tender inviting design proposals for the exterior paintwork of the turboprop, tail number HA-LQD, to ensure that the selected artwork could adorn this new arrival as soon as possible.

More than 200 people submitted plans in the tender. Malév asked designers to bear in mind that the aim is to promote the values of Hungary around the world. The result was an extraordinarily colourful and varied range of ideas coming from the pens of designers from amateurs right up to qualified graphic artists.

Once the jury - László Zsótér, the father of the Malév image; Kentaur, stage set and costume designer; Magdi Rúzsa, singer; Martin Gauss, CEO of Malév; Péter Takács, head of Malév Air Tours; András Kolossa, Malév brand manager and Viktor László aviation photographer - had made their selection of the 20 designs they most preferred from the wide array on offer, the 20 semi-finalists got the opportunity to look over the object their plans were actually designed for: the unpainted Q400 aircraft. This gave them the chance to come up with their finalized and complete art designs, which are also on display to the passengers (see below). One of the plans will be selected by the jury in the first week in October, and painted on to the aircraft in the near future.

The designer winning the special audience prize receives a unique and unforgettable flight on a Po-2 oldtimer and a one year subscription of Aeromagazine. A draw will be staged for online voters with the winner receiving a ticket for two, for any Malév destination in Europe.

We will inform the winner by e-mail and telephone after the polls for the audience vote close, i.e. after 16 October 2009. The name of the winner of the special prize will be published on the website on 21 October 2009.

Terms and conditions

The design judged best by the jury, which will be painted on to the Malév Q-400 aircraft, will be displayed at www.malev.hu / www.malev.com from the beginning of November.

N.B. The design awarded with the special audience prize is not necessarily the same as the design selected by the jury for the first prize in the tender.
