Budapest Ferihegy is Malév's home base airport, the grand-scale expansion project of which is currently in progress. Due to its dimensions, Budapest Airport allows passengers to transfer quickly to their connecting flights, while those departing from or arriving at Budapest -whether business or family travellers- can get all their flight-related requirements taken care of efficiently and in a convenient fashion, despite the construction works. Shops in the departure lounge offer major international brand-name products, with a wide range of cafés and restaurants also aspiring to make the time spent waiting more pleasant and enjoyable. The airport is accessible from the city by bus, shuttle service, taxi and, of course, by car.
As of midnight, March 30, 2008, Budapest Ferihegy became part of the Schengen area. From this day onwards, passengers arriving from or departing to Schengen countries will be served at Terminal 2A, whereas non-Schengen traffic will be handled by Terminal 2B. The two terminals are connected via a transfer corridor; passengers connecting at Ferihegy may use this as the way to move between theterminals. Since passport control has been abolished, Schengen passengers are only required to go through the security checkpoint before entering the departure lounge. If, however, their final destination is outside the Schengen area, they are still subjected to the strict border control measures at Terminal 2B.
A new passenger security system, launched in summer 2008, has greatly contributed to speeding up checking procedures. As a result, passenger security control has become a significantly faster process, causing waiting lines at Ferihegy to shrink or even disappear completely.
The year 2008 saw the launch of a EUR 261 million development project, which will result in an expansion and reconstruction of the entire Terminal 2 building and its vicinity. A new, central hall, named Sky Court, in between terminals 2A and 2B is planned to be completed by December 2010. Consequently, Budapest Ferihegy Airport will be able to welcome and offer high-quality services to 15 million passengers annually.
