Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden with its over 600.000 inhabitants.
Gothenburg was founded in 1621 by King Gustav II Adolf, but was mainly planned by German and Dutch drainage experts, since the site for the future city turned out to be on marshy ground. It has many bridges, the ever-present water, and fishrestaurants.
Later, Gothenburg became an important city in trade and shipping. The largest shipyard in Sweden was located here and made a strong impact on the trade and industry in the city for more than a century. During the 20th century the manufacturing of Volvo cars as well as as the industry of Svenska Kullagerfabriken employed many citizens. Nowadays, the old docks and harbour quarters in the city centre has moved closer to the sea. In the end of the seventies and eighties the large shipyards disappeared, and today, only Stena Lines ferry terminal and Gothenburg fish harbour remains.
In Gothenburg it is possible to enjoy small town atmosphere, green woods and salty waters without having to travel far. The lively old working class quarters Haga a five minute walk from the city centre, takes the visitor right back to the old times, with its picturesque surroundings.
One is never far from entertainment, beautiful sceneries and interesting sights in Göteborg. Even though it is a big city, it has kept its small town charm.
