Timisoara is the capital of the Banat. A nice precedent of coexisting different nations, because hungarians, romanians, germans and serbians live here together.
Its European being presented clearly in the revolution in 1989: this was the first town what made itself free and was the source of the all activities. In 1314 the town would be a royal capital and it was preserved till 1323. Ranked to town in 1342 and its apace development had begun. In the 19th century, Timisoara was the most developed city of Hungary, it was the first town where the gaslightning (1857), then the electric lightning (1884) was phased in of the streets. Timisoara was avoided under the Osman empire from 1552 to 1716. In the 18. century Maria Terezia had an order to populate different nations here, it is because the town is one of the most colourful places of Europe.Sights of the former Kossuth square (now Piata Unirii):Roman catholic dome church, was built between 1736-73, in austrian baroque style. The pictures of the main body was painted by the famous painter from Prague, Johann Nepomuk Schöpf.The Trinity sculpture is a monument of the plague epidemic in 1738-39. We can see an exhibition of 18-19th centuries icons and old books in the Serbian Bishop palace. Behind its building the Serbian cathedral.On the corner of the Bolyai street we find a tympan, where we can read in five languages that Janos Bolyai, the most famous hungarian mathematican reported from here his sensational geometrics discoveries.The Revolution Memories Museum is a remembarance of the fanatstic days of 1989. Sights of the former Opera square or LLoyd lane (now Piata Victoriei):The two ends of the square is bounded by the Opera and the orthodox cathedral (built in 1936-46), that is the largest one in Romania today. In the December of 1989 the revolutionary acticities against the dictatory were happaned mainly here.At the edge of the square we can see the Hunyadi castle, it was built in the 15th century. It named Janos Hunyadi, who lived here with his family, and his son, the later Mathias Rex was educated here also.There is a museum in this castle where we can see the very first electric street lights of Hungary.
