Warsaw, a city reborn

In Warsaw, statues of the Virgin Mary overlook elegant shopping areas, to the sound of Chopin from the rehearsal rooms of the many orchestras and musicians. There is a recognition of the Old and New Warsaw made necessary by the history of Poland, and the necessity of rebuilding almost from the start. But the old market square sits in the centre along with the town houses from Warsaw's previous eras, and such monuments as King Zygmunt's Column. We can also find a statue to celebrate Poland's democratic constitution, in 1791, only the second such constitution in the world. The University and Opera House are historic buildings, but even more notable would be the Ostrogski Palace, which hosts the Chopin memorial museum.
