Montenegro's administrative, economic and cultural centre is developing into a modern European town preserving the multi-thousand year heritage within the walls.
Thanks to its special position, it has always been an important intersection of the roads from East-West and North-South. This place with six rivers was already inhabited in prehistoric times, and is close to the Adriatic-sea, its climate is mild all year round. Podgorica was named after the nearby hill Gorica, but in 1946 politicians baptised it Titograd and it took 44 years to get its original name back.
Historical memories can be best observed along the Hergovacka Street. But the most can be seen from the clock-tower called Sat-Kula, which is also the symbol of the city. Culture-lovers will find valuable archaeological collections, excellent galleries and theatres and one can also participate at the spectacular festivals held here.
Special value of the city is its location: it takes only a short drive to the beaches and winter resorts. At Lake Scadar one can watch the largest bird preserve of Europe and at the sunny valley of Zetska fine wines can be tasted.
