The capital of the young state of Moldova is built on seven hills, boosts of 800,000 inhabitants and two rivers - the Bac and the Isnovat - run through it.
The history of Chisinau - just like the whole Moldova - is rather hectic. Written sources first mention this city in 1436, latter it was captured by the Turks and the Russians. It became a flourishing trade centre at the end of the 18th century and after the Russians named it the capital of Basarabia, it started its development on larger scales. Many buildings and roads were constructed at this time. Some 700 houses from this era can still be seen along with 18 temples - including the Cathedral of the 1840's - giving a sharp contrast to the modern governmental and office buildings. Among the museums the National History, the Ethnographical and the Archaeological collections are worth seeing.
Important buildings line up along the Stefan cel Mare Boulevard and here you can also find the Opera and the Ballet Theatre and the Organ Hall. Festivals are held on the Piata Marii Adunari Nationale Square and those seeking relaxation may visit the nearby lake of Ghidihici.
