The Balkans history of change
Macedonia is also known as the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia as Greece objected to the naming of itself as the Republic of Macedonia. It was thought that this name would represent a problem, as Greece already has a province called Macedonia, with some Slavic populations. The Ottoman Empire held the area for more than 400 years, and the resulting mix of peoples has made the region's national boundaries somewhat unclear. Surviving the upheaval, Macedonia the country still hosts some outstanding Byzantine monuments, as a testament to a previous period of stability and prosperity. This was built in the 6th century, but was redesigned by the Turkish sultan Murad in the 15th century. This was the pass on the „cotton road" - the trading routes that camels and caravans that needed to traverse this in previous times, as they made their way towards the markets of mainland Europe.
