Prishtina, the capital of Kosovo, has a population of about 250.000, most of them of Albanian nationality, and a small percent of other nationalities, such as Serbs, Montenegrins, Turks, Romes-Gypsies etc. It is a crossroad of significant international routes, for the intersection of arterial roads connecting the Western and Eastern Europe with the Near East.
Pristina is the capital of Kosovo. It's a pretty tough spot to travel to and don't expect a lot by way of tourist facilities. Travelling here may actually be pretty close to dangerous. The situation looks stable now, but things can change pretty fast on the Balkan. Battles and wars have played a big role in the history of Pristina long before the NATO stepped in. The famous Battle of Kosovo was fought here in 1389. This battle plays a pivotal role in Serbian history, one of the reasons the Serbs had such a hard time giving up Kosovo. Attractions in town include the Imperial Mosque and the 15th-century Mehmed II Fatih Mosque. In the old city centre with its narrow, twisting roads there are many shops, some Turkish baths. At the highest point you find a 13th-century fortress. When all's quiet on the eastern front day trips can be taken to the Gracanica monastery with impressive medieval frescoes or to the cathedrals of Pec, once the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
