Kosovo - an unknown country

From Pristina a 2 hour motorway journey leads to Pec, known to Albanians as Peja. The city stands near the border of Montenegro in forested hills, all accessible for those who like active holidays. From Pristina to the south we have Prizren - featuring pristine examples of Ottoman architecture, the Turkish Baths and many other reminders of history. It's a good place to try a Kosovan cappuccino, where the habit is to mix in chocolate syrup. In Prizren we can also see a number of mosques, some  dating from the 14th century, such as the Mehmet Pasha mosque, built in 1561.

The Visoki Decani monastery

The elegant exterior of this church  shows Roman, Byzantine and Gothic influences. Of similar beauty is the church's garden. The monastery is now on the UN list of World Heritage Sites, being an Orthodox Church in what is now the Kosovo independent state, which has a Muslim majority. There are three frescoes by Visoki Decani which are considered particularly beautiful, among them, Christ Carrying the Cross. The monastery partially explains some of the conflict surrounding the region, as it is regarded as one of the spiritual homes of Orthodoxy in the region.
