Venice, city of lagoons

Venice was once the world's richest city and capital of commerce. The treasures to be found in the city these days are more cultural and artistic, with the city itself a fantastic monument to invention and magnificence dating largely from the 5th century. The waterbuses roam the canals, many leading to the main Grand Canal, and it's from here that the panoramas of palaces, with spires of pink, orange, silver and red can be seen towering into the Venetian skyline. Perhaps the most striking is the Ca'd'Oro, the golden spires built 500 years ago to reflect the Gothic stylings of the age.  St Mark's Square draws the attention of many, with the Rialto Bridge and Doge's Palace drawing admiration.
