Founded in 1909 on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, Tel-Aviv has become the centre of Israel's commerce and economy.
In 1950 the modern metropolis got connected to Jaffa, one of the ancient ports of the world. The name of the city meaning "beautiful" really suits this town. The hill above the old port is mainly inhabited by artists and on the ground floor of their houses their works are displayed in their own galleries. From 1994 the Museum of Jaffa Antiquities shows the past of Jaffa.
The beaches of Tel Aviv are marked by gigantic hotels, offices and shops. Dizengoff, the main street of the city is named after its first mayor, the centre is the two-story Dizengoff Square, with a colourful fountain. It is worth visiting some of the museums of Tel-Aviv, just like the Tel Aviv Museum with works of Rodin and Chagall, the Ha-Aretz (Museum of the Country) and the collection of Ha-Tefuzo (House of Diaspora).
