Prague is the "Jewel in the Crown" of Central Europe and tourism is a major force.
Tourism, while important, has not yet overrun Prague. Indeed much of the reconstruction and development of the city has been funded by tourism. In 1992 the whole historical centre of Prague, all 866 hectares, was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural & Natural Heritage Register. Since the Middle Ages, Prague has played a pivotal role in the development of Central Europe. Prague is widely recognised as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Prague centre is made up of 4 districts, which stretch across both banks of the Vltava River. On one bank is Stare Mesto (Old Town), Nove Mesto (New Town) & Josefov. On the other (Prague Castle side), is Mala Strana. 2 more districts are close to Prague's city centre: Hradcany (at the back of Prague Castle) and Vysehrad, to the south of the New Town.
High on the Petrin hillside, with magnificent views over the whole city, is Prague Castle, the largest medieval castle in Europe & Prague's No.1 tourist attraction. Take a walk on the ancient Charles Bridge, and you will know why Prague is so beloved. There are also excellent vistas to be enjoyed from: the Old Town Hall Tower, the Old Town Bridge Tower, the Lesser Town Bridge Tower, St. Vitus Cathedral Tower, Petrin Observation Tower & Vysehrad. As tourism is now a major factor in Prague's economy, certain pubs and restaurants also offer splendid views over the city: pubs with views, restaurants with views.
