For many Hungarians, the golden sand beach in Bulgaria stirs up sweet memories of childhood holidays. Today, it is mostly popular among German and English tourists, and Hungarian is hardly heard there anymore. In other words, Varna is waiting to be rediscovered...

If you want to spend your summer holiday near refreshing water, then you must first decide whether you prefer the seaside or a healing spa. There is no such dilemma in Bulgaria, as there are more than 500 medicinal springs and around the downtown area among the ruins of the ancient Roman spa, you will realize how much this way of life has become one with the history of Varna (or Odessos, as it was formerly known). These public baths were the biggest in the Balkans and once occupied an area of 7000 square meters. On the way from the city to the Golden Sand Beach, it is a good idea to visit the resorts of St. Constantine I Elena. Here, one can sunbathe on the beach, relax in a café or restaurant, or swim in one of the nearby, inviting pools. Many of these pools contain medicinal waters, which is discovered from the discoloration of our jewellery. But, what is unhealthy for your jewellery is also good for the body, as this water is extremely beneficial in the treatment of locomotive, rheumatic and skin complaints. It is not surprising that the locals make full use of these facilities. After work, they often visit the pools alongside the shore to swim or just enjoy themselves.

Party time!

Downtown Varna has a totally different face by day than by night, but the greatest contrast is to be observed between the coastal district and the other areas of the town. Boutiques, restaurants and cafés line the pedestrian street called Slivnica. Delightfully refreshing Italian ice cream can be sampled from stalls, where you pay by the gram rather than the scoop. Ice cream desserts and cakes are also perennial favourites in the restaurants, alongside the irresistible honey pancakes. While strolling around, you will notice that, besides the children riding around in electric toy cars, that the adult 'hammer of strength' game is extremely popular. The Bulgarians know how to live life to the fullest, and this is reflected in their every gesture. If you turn right at the end of Slivnica Street, then you will come across the Planetarium, Aquarium and Maritime Museum. If you turn left, however, then you will find yourself in a world-class Soho-esque alley that is several kilometres long and lined with discos, clubs, bars and restaurants. The choices are endless, and it would take several seasons to explore all of the available options. Following the locals' advice, the night spot to try is the Xtravaganzza Disco, which is currently the most fashionable.

Family dolphin show

It takes a trained eye to detect the yellow signpost that directs visitors towards the dolphin show in the Primorski Park, which is quite away from the centre. Not to worry, however, because a local bus will take you right there. The playful family of dolphins that have been entertaining audiences for more than 14 years are truly adorable (show begin at 10:30, 12:00 and 15:30. For information call: +359 52 302 199.). The two bottlenose dolphin parents, a brother, and their children are the main attractions in the show. Special recognition should also go to their trainers, who are practically members of the family and were selected by the dolphins themselves from a large pool of applicants. The show reveals a huge amount of humour and incredible teamwork, which makes every stunt look like spontaneous fun. After the show, while sipping your drink in a café downstairs, you can further admire the friendly mammals through a glass wall as you recall Luc Besson's famous film, The Big Blue.

Plants and slides

The famous 'Golden Sand' (17 km from Varna) Beach combines all the assets of a traditional, relaxing beach holiday, while the neighbouring and more elegant Riviera Beach targets a wealthier clientele. Whichever beach you may happen to choose, you will certainly not want to miss the local slide park called Aquapolis. Younger holiday makers will be attracted by the countless children's pools, while older fun seekers will be thrilled by its curling slides. The 18-meter super slide, in particular, is a real test of courage, and its top speed can reach 60 km/h (www.aquapolis.net, opening hours 10-19h). In the meantime, parents can sip refreshing cocktails while soaking at a pool bar. Apart from the 'Golden Sand', the locals like to go north to Kranevo for picnicking, barbecuing and relaxing on the weekends. On colder days, it is a good idea to rend a car and go for a short tour to nearby Balchik, which is famous for its spectacular botanical gardens. On the shores of this fishermen's village, the cosy restaurants offer calamari, mussels, shrimps and other fresh seafood.

Glowing coals and rakia

Resort areas would not be complete without original Bulgarian folk dancing and the local, hot coal walkers. In the centre of Saint Constantine I Elena, the Copitoto Restaurant offers dance shows in the evenings, along with other specialities. On hot summer days, the tarator soup, made from cucumber and yogurt, is truly refreshing. The 'Filet Elena' ham is a genuine gastronomic speciality that resembles Italian Prosciutto, and it is best accompanied by a glass of brandy-like rakia. Another speciality to sample is burek, which is a dish made of roasted peppers filled with cheese and herbs. Instead of bread, try purlenka, which is cheese wrapped in strudel dough. The best idea is to order several dishes and sample all of them. Besides fine meals, hospitable locals, comfortable hotels and high-quality services, Bulgaria offers plenty more to entice you back again.
