Luckily no more traces of war can be seen in Sarajevo. In the capital of Bosnia-Hercegovina life goes on peacefully, its main street - where most of the sights are concentrated - is full of cafés, and in the bazaar everything's for sale. Monuments of the city are best discovered on foot, they are all within walking distance.
You can find a surprisingly great number of Turkish monuments, since during the occupation the Ottomans built minarets, schools, mosques, khans and converted Bosnians to Muslims. Probably the most important memory of this era is the Begova (Gazi Huserv) mosque, the largest and best-preserved Muslim temple of the Balkan. Just opposite the Kursumli Medresa is now exhibition place for contemporary artists. The old Serbian Church was built in 1539, next to it you can find an 18th century mosque and old, two-storey houses with porches. From the banks of the river Miljacka enjoy the magnificent view of the mountains!
